--Spouse & Partner Visa · Unmarried Partner

UK Unmarried Partner Visa

You don’t need to be married to bring your partner to the UK — but you do need to prove your relationship is genuine, committed, and equivalent to a marriage in substance. Cohabitation evidence is the single biggest hurdle on this route, and it’s where most preventable refusals happen.

--The Key Difference

What sets this route apart from a spouse visa.

NOT JUST "TOGETHER A WHILE"

The Home Office isn't assessing how long you've been dating — it's assessing whether your relationship is genuinely equivalent to a marriage or civil partnership. The general expectation is 2 years of living together, though current guidance can accept couples who haven't cohabited continuously if there's a good reason (work, immigration restrictions, cultural or legal barriers) and it's properly evidenced. Cohabitation remains by far the strongest evidence you can provide either way.

A genuine, subsisting relationship

Regular contact, shared responsibilities, and an ongoing life together — assessed on the evidence as a whole, not a single document.

A durable relationship

Similar in nature to a marriage — a serious, long-term commitment, not a casual or recent relationship.

Both partners aged 18+

And not so closely related you'd be prohibited from marrying under UK law.

Previous relationships ended

Any prior marriage, civil partnership or long-term relationship must have permanently broken down.

--Cohabitation Evidence

What actually carries weight.

A caseworker can’t observe your relationship directly — they can only read what you submit. Documents in both your names, from independent official sources, carry the most weight.

STRONGEST
Joint tenancy agreement or mortgage, both names on a bank account, joint utility bills — official documents issued by independent third parties, in both partners' names.
GOOD SUPPORT
Individually addressed documents to both of you at the same address (council tax, GP registration, driving licence), dated across the full period.
SUPPLEMENTARY
Photos together over time, travel records, correspondence — useful alongside official evidence, rarely sufficient alone.
IF YOU HAVEN'T COHABITED
Evidence of regular contact, visits, financial support, and a clear, credible explanation of why living together wasn't possible.

Beyond proving the relationship itself, this route follows the same rules as the spouse visa.

Frequently asked.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION ANSWER & DETAILS
Do we have to live together for 2 years for a UK Unmarried Partner Visa? Not strictly anymore. While 2 years of cohabitation remains the clearest benchmark, updated Home Office rules permit couples who haven't lived together continuously to qualify—provided they show a genuine, durable relationship and a credible reason for living apart (such as work, study, or legal restrictions).
What is the financial requirement for a UK Unmarried Partner Visa? For first-time applicants, you must demonstrate a combined annual income of at least £29,000. This threshold can be met through salaried employment, self-employment, pension income, or cash savings (or a combination of income and savings).
What counts as strong cohabitation evidence? The strongest documents are official third-party items issued to both names at the same address, such as joint tenancy agreements, mortgage statements, joint bank accounts, and utility bills. Individually addressed official mail (like council tax bills or driving licences) spread across the period is also accepted.
How long does the UK Unmarried Partner Visa decision take? Standard processing for applications made from outside the UK takes up to 24 weeks, while applications made inside the UK take up to 8 weeks. Priority and Super Priority processing services are available in most regions to accelerate decision times.
Does the Unmarried Partner Visa lead to British Citizenship? Yes. The visa is granted for 2.5 years initially and must be extended for another 2.5 years. After completing 5 years on this route, you become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and subsequently British citizenship.
Can I apply for an Unmarried Partner Visa from inside the UK? Yes, provided you hold a valid long-term UK visa (such as a Skilled Worker, Graduate, or Student visa). You cannot switch directly to an Unmarried Partner Visa if you are currently in the UK on a Visitor Visa.
