Sponsor Licence Renewal & Extension

“Navigating a sponsorship licence renewal requires employers to stay compliant with the latest UK Home Office guidance. If you are searching for this because your licence seems due to expire, there is good news: routine 4-year renewals were abolished in April 2024. Most sponsors do not need to submit a renewal application or pay a fee. Instead, the priority now is checking your status on the Sponsor Management System (SMS) and maintaining compliance, as Home Office audits and reporting duties are where the real risk sits today.”

Sponsorship Licence Renewal
--Rule Change

Sponsor licence renewal rules changed significantly on 6 April 2024. The UK Home Office automatically granted a 10-year sponsor licence extension to all eligible active sponsors whose licences were set to expire on or after this date. Employers face no renewal fees, applications, or actions to extend their licence.

However, key exceptions apply: UK Expansion Worker sponsor licences and Scale-up Worker sponsor licences remain capped at a 4-year validity period and cannot be renewed.

--Timeline

What changed, and when.

BEFORE 6 APRIL 2024

Renewal every 4 years, with a fee

Sponsors had to reapply and pay a fee equivalent to the original application — £536 (small/charitable) or £1,476 (medium/large) at the rates then in force.

6 APRIL 2024

Routine renewal abolished

The Home Office announced it was scrapping the 4-year renewal requirement for Worker and Temporary Worker licences.

TODAY

Most licences run indefinitely

Provided compliance duties are met, licences continue without a renewal date. The Home Office has shifted its focus to ongoing, any-time compliance checks instead.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

Ongoing compliance replaces sponsorship licence renewal

Instead of submitting a formal sponsorship licence renewal application every 4 years, businesses must now maintain strict Home Office compliance records to pass unannounced UKVI audits.

--Check Your Status

What we actually do for you.

Since there’s usually no renewal application to make, our role here is confirmation and protection, not paperwork for its own sake.

Confirm your extension

Some Sponsor Management System accounts will still display the original expiry date even after the automatic extension. We confirm your actual status directly.

Compliance health check

With no renewal date to prompt a review, we assess your records, right-to-work checks, and reporting history against current Home Office expectations.

Handle the exceptions

If you're on the UK Expansion Worker or Scale-up route, your licence genuinely is time-limited – we manage that reapplication process for you.

--Exceptions

When you do still need to act.

UK Expansion Worker & Scale-up routes

These remain fixed at 4 years and cannot be renewed. You'll need to submit a fresh application before expiry, not an extension.

Licences that expired before 6 April 2024

If your licence lapsed before the rule change, the old renewal process may still apply to your situation – worth checking directly rather than assuming.

Frequently asked.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION ANSWER & DETAILS
Do UK businesses still need to renew their Sponsor Licence? In most cases, no. As of 6 April 2024, the Home Office removed the requirement for routine 4-year sponsor licence renewals. Licences due to expire on or after this date were automatically extended by 10 years, eliminating the periodic renewal fee for general routes.
Are any sponsor licence routes exempt from automatic renewal extensions? Yes. Specialized routes such as the UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up Worker sponsor licences are granted for a maximum non-extendable period of 4 years. Businesses using these routes must switch or apply under standard worker routes to continue sponsoring staff.
How do we check our updated Sponsor Licence expiry date? Your Level 1 User can log into the Sponsorship Management System (SMS) and navigate to the Licence Summary section. The system displays your updated 10-year expiration date automatically applied by UKVI.
Does removing the renewal requirement mean Home Office audits have stopped? No. While formal renewal applications are no longer required, the Home Office has shifted to continuous compliance monitoring. UKVI regularly conducts both announced and unannounced audits to inspect record-keeping, right-to-work checks, and reporting compliance.
What happens if a business fails to maintain continuous compliance? If UKVI identifies compliance breaches, they may downgrade, suspend, or revoke your licence. A revocation results in current sponsored workers having their leave curtailed to 60 days and triggers a 12-month cooling-off period before you can reapply.
How can legal advisors assist with continuous licence compliance? Immigration specialists conduct mock Home Office audits, review your HR systems and Appendix D record-keeping, update key personnel in the SMS, and assist with challenging UKVI suspensions or action plans to safeguard your status.
